DESCRIPTION:“The Art of the Critique” \nWhen we ask others to evaluate our artwork\, we often hear comments that range from “I like it” to “That’s horrible.” Neither of those types of comments benefits the artist. During November’s CAW meeting\, the program will focus on how to make critique sessions helpful for the artist. \nWe will briefly review compositional principles\, work on our “artistic vocabulary” and present guidelines to make critique a comfortable and meaningful experience. Larry Hamel-Lambert\, an Associate Professor Emeritus of Visual Communication at Ohio University\, has years of experience guiding students through the critique process. \n\nPlease bring one piece of your artwork to the meeting. Smaller pieces preferred\, framed or unframed.

DESCRIPTION:The May 27 meeting of the Community Artists of Westerville (CAW) will offer a creative three-part experience unlike any we’ve had before. \nFirst\, long-time members of Columbus Urban Sketchers\, Jean Robbins and Kara Razek\, will introduce us to the mission and practices of the global Urban Sketchers movement—of which Columbus is just one of hundreds of chapters around the world. Jean and Kara will also cover the essentials of sketching live on site\, offering tips and techniques to help you get started. \nNext\, with sketchbooks and pencils in hand—either your own or provided by CAW—we’ll head out into the surrounding area to sketch scenes of our choosing\, just as Urban Sketchers do. We’ll spend about 45 minutes capturing our surroundings on paper. \nFinally\, we’ll regroup to share our sketches with one another (sharing is optional\, of course). Whether you’re a seasoned artist or just curious to try something new\, this interactive event is all about exploration\, creativity\, and community. \nCome to the May meeting ready to sketch\, connect\, and be inspired!

DESCRIPTION:Along with our regular April monthly meeting\, we will welcome Fred Fochtman speak. \nFred Fochtman\, is a graduate of The Ohio State University and continued his studies at the Columbus College of Art and Design. He is a figurative oil painter and art restorer.  He writes\, “As a painter who works from direct observation\, I move between different subject matter with still life being a part of that whole. When I am fortunate to recognize it\, I am drawn to imagery that is found over that which is created.” \nHis artwork has been exhibited throughout Ohio\, Maine and West Virginia\, as well as Cuba. The winner of numerous awards\, he has been an instructor and workshop presenter for 10 years. His artwork is represented by Sharon Weiss Gallery in Columbus

DESCRIPTION:Along with our regular March monthly meeting\, we will welcome Janelle Hallett to speak with us. Janelle Hallett is a fiber artist and jewelry designer who makes wall hangings\, baskets\, and earrings. Music is one source of her creativity and she will discuss this and the processes she uses when working in fiber at her presentation.  \n*** Note- at this meeting we will also be doing an art supply swap. If you have art related supplies that you are no longer using\, bring them in! We plan to raffle off larger/more valuable items ***
